If you want to determine someone's progressiveness, asking them about Senator Bernie Sanders is a good starting point. But what does it mean to be progressive? Let's delve into the essence of progressivism, free from party labels and preconceived notions.

First and foremost, being a registered Democrat does not equate to being progressive. The Democratic Establishment comprises a diverse range of ideologies, including moderates and conservatives. It's crucial to understand that being progressive is not a synonym for being liberal. Unfortunately, the term "liberal" has been negatively framed by conservatives, leading some to distance themselves from it. Now, there are efforts to co-opt the term "progressive."

At its core, progressivism embodies the belief in the need for a political and cultural revolution. Progressives champion social justice, civil rights, racial and gender equity, robust environmental protections, fair taxation, and ensuring living wages for all workers. Unlike those content with the status quo, progressives strive for transformative change and a better future for everyone.

So, how does this apply to El Paso, this city of dreams and aspirations? El Paso deserves leaders who prioritize the well-being of its people over special interest groups. It's time to break free from the influence of wealthy developers, ending Tax Increment Reinvestment Zones that favor their pet projects.

Preserving natural wonders like Lost Dog Trail and safeguarding historical landmarks like Duranguito from greedy developers should be paramount. El Paso Electric's rates should not burden residents for purposes unrelated to essential services. Instead, the city must embrace renewable energy and make it accessible to all.

Stepping away from unfavorable deals that only offer low-wage jobs is essential. Let's work towards creating quality jobs with living wages that empower El Paso's workforce. And in our pursuit of fair elections, candidates should stand on their own policies and ideas, not be influenced by big money.

A progressive revolution in El Paso is possible, one that echoes the values championed by Senator Bernie Sanders. Though he didn't secure the Democratic nomination, his message of an equitable future resonates with many in El Paso County and the borderlands.

Justicia Fronteriza envisions turning this possibility into a reality. The journey begins with campaign finance reform, leveling the playing field with contribution limits to amplify ideas and policies that prioritize the common good. With a progressive majority at City Hall, policies can be shaped to benefit all residents, bridging gaps and promoting fairness.

Together, El Paso holds the power to bring change, not just within the city but beyond its borders. Embracing the spirit of progressivism, we can pave the way for meaningful change and make history together.
