El Paso, a city known for its frontera rich culture and diverse community, has been on a journey towards progressive change over the past two years. At the forefront of this transformation stands Verónica Carbajal, a passionate advocate for justice, equity, and democracy. Her leadership with Justicia Fronteriza has left an indelible mark on the city, propelling it toward a brighter future.

Verónica Carbajal recently announced her run for City Council, District 2, an endeavor that promises to continue her legacy of transformative change in El Paso. This opportunity arose when City Representative Alexsandra Annello declared her candidacy for State Representative, District 77, resulting in a vacancy for the District 2 seat. In accordance with Texas Ethics Commission rules, Verónica resigned from her role as President of Justicia Fronteriza to pursue public office. Her dedication and hard work during her tenure at the helm of Justicia Fronteriza are commendable. We extend our heartfelt appreciation for her years of service in leading our organization and eagerly anticipate her upcoming tenure on City Council.

Champion of Progressive Values

Verónica Carbajal's political journey began with her run for mayor in 2020, where she displayed a resilient spirit. Even in the face of defeat, she remarked, “In my 16 years as a legal aid lawyer, I've learned you don't always win by winning or lose by losing. You have to keep your eye on the prize. And the prize for this campaign has always been to help our community rise. We will continue to do that.” This determination and dedication led her to the next chapter in her journey.

Undeterred by the mayoral race outcome, Verónica embarked on an inspiring endeavor by founding Justicia Fronteriza. In a city often overshadowed by national politics, her commitment to the local community shines as a beacon of hope.

A Force for Change

As President of Justicia Fronteriza, Verónica led the charge for progressive values. With unwavering determination, she directed efforts to elect progressive leaders in key positions. The city has seen remarkable changes with progressive leaders now guiding the City Council, Commissioner's Court, and the EPISD school board.

Making Strides Toward Democracy

In addition to promoting progressive candidates, Verónica has been instrumental in advancing campaign finance reforms in municipal elections. These changes are vital in ensuring that the democratic process is fair, transparent, and accountable.

A Bittersweet Transition

Her years of dedicated service to the organization have been invaluable. The community is now eagerly looking forward to her tenure on the City Council, where she will continue to work towards positive change.

Dedication to Justice

As a Texas RioGrande Legal Aid lawyer, for the last 19 years, Verónica has been fighting for justice for the most vulnerable community members. She has faced numerous challenges, including the pandemic, mass shooting, natural disasters, and economic crises, with hard work, creativity, and humility. Veronica has also built teams that have risen above these challenges, showcasing her strong leadership and commitment.

A Ready Leader
